"...Virgin coconut oil (VCO) is not new. Its preparation and curative properties were known to Ayurvedic medicine practitioners of India 3 to 4 millennia ago.... The resurrection of VCO started slowly in the '80s with the discovery of long-hidden research findings of several investigators which were disseminated through the freewheeling, peer-review independent internet. The many health benefits and curative properties of coconut oil were thus revealed. But because of the oil's bad reputation among doctors as causing heart disease, it took years for the truth to sink in. Cooking oil from copra was not at all attractive as medicine. But when VCO with its superior physical qualities re-entered the market early in 2004, coconut oil as a medical cure (externally for skin ailments and internally for systemic diseases) literally exploded into the market and into mass consciousness..." Navigate through confusion of Cold pressed (extraction of coconut milk from fresh coconut meat), Cold processed (fermentation of coconut milk before heating the oil), Traditional Philippines ANH process (fermentation of coconut milk + 3 weeks natural drying at ambient temperature of about 30-35degC), ANH Instant 24-hour non-fermentation process (physical cold extraction of fresh coconut milk without heat), Dry process (dried/cooked fresh coconut meat gratings), Wet process (from coconut milk of fresh coconut), Biotechnology process (coconut milk + enzyme +/or bacteria).... and various methods of heating to remove latent moisture from wet processed coconut oil. Not all Virgin Coconut Oils are the same. You should know the truth about VCOs and our intention is to bring you that truth as best as we can. Until now only a small group of lipid (fat) researchers were familiar with the incredible health benefits of a unique group of SATURATED fats found in coconut oil. Most people are generally ignorant of these benefits, shunning coconut oil because of common misconception regarding dietary fat. But this situation is changing today as the amazing nutritional and therapeutic benefits of tropical oils become better known. A unique group of saturated fats found in mother's milk and coconut oil, known as 'Medium Chain Fatty Acids (or MCFAs)' have a remarkable and positive effect on your health. Coconut oil is about 92~95% saturated fats consisting up of ~65% MCFAs of C8 to C12 chain (fatty acid profile available here). It is also known as the 'miracle oil' and should be on everyone's healthy list. Click here for the health benefits of VCO.
A) :- Welcome to COCOSCIENCE VCO NUTRITION..... the home of Cocoscience ANH-VCO, a fine PREMIUM quality 100% Absolute No Heat virgin coconut oil. We would like to introduce you to the many aspects of the Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) market. Development of VCO started in 1998 in the Philippines and from 2000 onwards made its way into the United States. We will let you know why VCO is known as "the healthiest oil on earth" and why you should incorporate it into your daily diet. This market is now so complicated and confusing that as a consumer it would be quite difficult for you to differentiate the many different grades of commercial VCO.
VCO may be defined as the natural unadulterated sparkling clear and near colorless oil produced from fresh coconut meat (color max- 0.1Red/1Yellow). Commercially processed crude coconut oil is made from sun-dried or heat-dried copra and is brown in color; hence a refining, bleaching & deodorization (RBD) process is needed to make it acceptable. A descriptive sensory evaluation (eg. rancidity, color, nutty aromas, turbidity, etc...) can be used to describe and differentiate the various types of VCOs, crude coconut oil and RBD coconut oil. As a consumer, you will find it difficult to look into such parameters hence reliable labeling on the bottle will be the most important piece of information. The label must give you important details (eg. process/timing, ANH-VCO/VCO, chemicals, additives, enzymes, bacteria & manufacturer's contact/website) to allow you to make a good purchase. If you have heard of "extra" virgin coconut oil then you should be informed "extra" virgin is only applicable in olive oil.
What is the difference in benefit between VCO and ordinary & RBD coconut oil ? The major difference is in the micronutrient content. Cold processed/traditional coconut oil (VCO) from fresh coconut contains about seven (7) times more plant phenols than ordinary copra/heat processed/RBD coconut oil. These phenols are heat sensitive and well-known for their anti-oxidant activities. The phenols are biologically active in the cold processed oil... CLICK HERE for more info. The fatty acid composition is generally the same for all types of coconut oil - the only difference is whether they are in the natural triglyceride form (MCT) or detached/oxidised 'free fatty acid' (MCFA) form. You will notice either MCT or MCFA is used as a general descripton for the property of coconut oil only to put emphasise on the medium chain fatty acids' benefits and not on the oil quality characteristics.
It is generally recommended that people consume 2-3 tablespoons (20-30ml) worth of virgin coconut oil daily for maximum health benefit. And to reap the benefits of as much antioxidants as possible, purchase the ANH-VCO grade for raw consumption from reliable manufacturer. Know what you are buying !

WHAT are the types & grades of VCOs available in the market? There are generally 2 Broad Grades of VCOs (1. Premium Grade (Wet Process) & 2. General Grade (either Wet or Dry Process) based on various methods of processing:-
1.) Therapeutic & Culinary Grade (Wet Process only):- i) Classic Premium Grade ANH-VCO made with Absolute No Heat (ANH) and carefully controlled environment using cold processing technology and fresh quality coconut cream from mature premium traditional coconut. Meticulous care is under-taken during processing to ensure a high grade premium oil which is suitable for raw consumption. Contains naturally occuring Vitamin E (alpha & gamma tocopherols) & lauric acid (C12) ; and, ii) Special Enhanced Grade "Super Natural Vitamin E Premium ANH-VCO". Super Vitamin E Tocotrienols Kill Cancer Cells - more information on natural full spectrum 'Super Vitamin E' Premium ANH-VCO .
Premium Absolute No Heat (ANH)-VCO grade is the finest quality available today. They are made either through the Philippine's ambient temperature fermentation and multiple filtration process (about 4 weeks process) or the Malaysian quick Physical Cold Extraction process. It is made from pure coconut cream cold-extracted from quality mature traditional coconut and the oil is extracted without fermentation, chemical, additive, bacteria (biotechnology process) and enzyme. 100% Aboslutely No Heat (ANH) is used from beginning till the end of process to seal in the natural potency and micronutrients. ANH-VCO is usually packed in clear colorless GLASS bottles to protect the oil quality and potency. Plastic bottles will alter the potency of the oil. ANH is a more expensive grade but you get both the potent micronutrient and medium chain oils for better health maintenance. (Used mainly for raw consumption, health supplement and fine culinary preparation).

2.) General Grade (either Wet or Dry Process):- for cooking & occassional raw consumption (containing lauric acid and little or no antioxidants), where the final oil is heated (to various degree) to remove latent moisture resulting in full or partial destruction of the anti-oxidants. Most VCOs (about 90%) fall into this catergory, but modern marketing tricks tend to create a lot of confusion to imply unrealistic quality. The common production method here is via expeller pressing (a dry process using dried/cooked coconut meat & gratings). The other method is using coconut milk - a wet process with addition of external protease enzyme {Modified VCO} and/or bacteria {Biotechnology VCO} and/or addition of chemicals/additives, whereby the oil extracted undergoes a final process of heating to remove latent moisture. Packaging is normally clear plastic and/or colored bottles. (Used mainly for general healthy cooking and occasional raw consumption).
We hope to shed some light into the market and try to explain why there is so much price variation. If you are looking at the raw consumption of VCO then you should be concerned about the manufacturing methods employed and who you are buying from. You may have already visited many VCO sites and have gathered a wealth of information about the product. Unfortunately most sites may not give you much details on what to look for in VCO other than the hard sell slogan of "...superior quality product, extra virgin, no heat process, best grade, etc...". Use this simple logic.....buy Premium ANH grade from reliable manufacturers for raw consumption and cheaper General grade (or even the cheapest RBD grade) for high temperature cooking!. We will explain some details to help you become a more informed consumer. Eat Fat - Your Life Depends on it! Read our FAQ section. Find out how to use VCO and who can use it.
